Vieille Jacques

Jacques Vieille - Les Grandes Formes - Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst 1995

Beautifully made Jacques Vieille artist's book from 1995, created as part of the public commission for the Gooise Knopp interchange on the Dutch motorway.
Born in 1948, Baden-Baden, Jacques Vieille is an architect, landscape gardener, decorator and horticulturist all rolled into one. From the outset, his work has been rooted in a skilful, ironic and poetic articulation between nature and culture, art and artifice, the organic and the mechanical. A subtle edifice with numerous ramifications that play on the mimicry, exchange or opposition of these various elements, and whose base is the column. This ‘living pillar’, heir to the tree and structure of architecture, is expressed in a multitude of ways throughout his work, and is also the foundation that underpins his approach as a sculptor of spaces.
